Spielbank Wiesbaden: games, opening hours, admission

Spielbank Wiesbaden plays inside the Kurhaus at Kurhausplatz 1, the 1907 spa assembly building where Fyodor Dostoevsky lost at roulette in 1865 and afterwards wrote The Gambler. The house states that admission is free for both the live tables and the slot floor — which contradicts many out-of-date price lists still circulating online. The minimum age is 18 and a valid national ID card or passport is required. The dress code is detailed but does not call for business attire.

Dostoevsky, the Kurhaus, and why the history matters

Of all German casinos, Wiesbaden has the best-known literary past. Fyodor Dostoevsky gambled away his money at roulette here in 1865, and The Gambler was written directly out of that experience. The house displays a roulette wheel from that period and treats the episode as part of its identity rather than an embarrassment.

The interesting part is not the anecdote but what it shows. The question of how to protect people from their own gambling is not a modern invention. What is handled today by a national register, an ID check and a database comparison was, in the nineteenth century, an open flank down which fortunes disappeared.

Play takes place in the Kurhaus, the assembly building at Kurhausplatz 1 that also serves as the city's congress and events venue. Visiting the Spielbank means entering part of that building rather than a self-contained casino, which explains the tone of the place: closer to a formal evening out than to an amusement arcade.

Admission is free, whatever the guidebooks say

On the question visitors ask most often, the house is explicit: admission to both the classic game and the slot floor is free of charge. That is stated on its own visitor information page.

Directories, guidebooks and older articles still quote €2.50 for a day ticket, sometimes with further tiers. Those figures are obsolete. They persist because secondary sources copy each other and nobody updates them when a house changes its policy.

So you will pay nothing at the door. The identity check still happens — it is tied to a statutory duty to screen against the exclusion register, not to the sale of a ticket.

What you cannot wear

Wiesbaden does not require a suit. It asks for appropriate, clean clothing including footwear, and says explicitly that a business look is unnecessary. In exchange it publishes an unusually precise list of what is not allowed.

Refused at the door: outfits with offensive prints or camouflage patterns, football and club shirts, sportswear, hoodies, heavily ripped jeans, shorts on men, vest tops, sandals, flip-flops, visible lace-up boots and headwear of any kind.

That list applies to the whole building, not only to the tables — a real difference from Hamburg, where the slot floor has no dress code at all and the live tables have a stricter one. If you are visiting several German houses, do not assume one set of rules travels with you.

Hours, closing days and one unresolved detail

The slot floor runs from 11:00 Monday to Saturday and from 12:00 on Sundays and public holidays, closing at 04:00. The live tables open daily at 14:45; they close at 03:00 from Sunday to Thursday and at 04:00 on Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of public holidays.

One retrieval of the Sunday slot-floor hours produced a closing time of 16:00 rather than 04:00. That is most likely a display error rather than a real schedule, but it could not be resolved. If you are planning a Sunday evening, confirm the time on +49 611 536100 first.

The house closes on Good Friday, Volkstrauertag, Totensonntag, 24 December and 25 December. Volkstrauertag is Germany's day of national mourning and Totensonntag the Protestant Sunday of the dead; both fall in November and both shift each year.

Operator, state law, and the limits of the federal treaty

The house is operated by Spielbank Wiesbaden GmbH & Co. KG. Hesse grants casino licences to private companies while keeping supervision with the state; legal supervision of Hessian casinos rests with the Hessian Ministry of the Interior and Sport. Hessian state law also determines where a casino may exist at all — alongside Wiesbaden, that means Bad Homburg, Kassel and Frankfurt Airport.

The Interstate Treaty on Gambling 2021 applies to casinos only in part. Its § 2 paragraph 2 lists exhaustively which provisions reach them: the objectives in § 1, § 4(1) to (4), §§ 5, 6 and 7 to 8d, § 20, § 23 and the tenth section. Licensing, the number of houses, the rules of play, opening hours, admission and taxation are governed by state legislation instead.

That is why the exclusion check at the door looks identical in Wiesbaden, Dortmund and Osnabrück, while admission prices and minimum ages differ sharply. Player protection is harmonised nationally; the commercial framework is not. The casino levy each house pays on its gross gaming revenue also varies by state and is often progressive; no reliable current rate for Hesse could be obtained from an official source, so no percentage is given here.

OASIS and where to find help

At the entrance your document is checked and your details compared against OASIS, the national gambling exclusion register. The legal basis is § 8 paragraph 3 of the Interstate Treaty on Gambling 2021: identification by inspection of an official identity document, or an equivalent identity check, and comparison against the register held under § 23 — in land-based venues on every entry.

OASIS is operated by the state of Hesse through the Regierungspräsidium Darmstadt on behalf of all sixteen states, so Wiesbaden happens to sit in the same state as the authority running the system. A self-exclusion lasts at least three months, with one year as the default; a third-party exclusion at least a year. Entries are lifted only on written application to the Regierungspräsidium, taking effect one week later for a self-exclusion and one month later for a third-party exclusion. Both are free of charge for players under § 8c GlüStV.

The Federal Institute for Public Health (BIÖG) runs a free, anonymous helpline on 0800 1 37 27 00; self-tests and information are at check-dein-spiel.de.

The register in detail

How entries are made, how long they run and how they end is set out on OASIS — Germany's gambling exclusion register.

What the Kurhaus offers and the internet in Germany does not

Roulette, blackjack and poker with a croupier exist here at real tables. They do not exist in replica form on German-licensed websites. Virtual slot games that reproduce classic banked table games — roulette, blackjack or baccarat in particular — are prohibited. The GGL licenses virtual slot games, online poker, sports betting and horse-race betting, but no online versions of the table games.

Online casino games in the sense of § 22c GlüStV are expressly excluded from the GGL's remit and belong to the individual states. Each may offer or license them for its own territory alone, capped at the number of casino licences its own state act would have permitted as at 17 January 2020.

If you find a site carrying the name of a German casino house and promising online roulette, check it against the GGL whitelist. There is no nationwide online offering by the German state casinos.

Admission and the exclusion register

Since 1 July 2021 every German Spielbank checks at the door against the nationwide exclusion register. Anyone entered in OASIS gets into play neither online nor on the premises. How OASIS works
