Spielbank Hamburg Esplanade: games, opening hours, admission

Casino Esplanade at Stephansplatz 10 is Spielbank Hamburg's city-centre house, a short walk from the Binnenalster. Admission is €2, the minimum age is 18, and on documents the house is blunt: national ID card or passport, a driving licence will not do. The slot floor runs daily from 12:00 to 04:00 and the live tables open at 17:00. The two areas have different dress rules, and that is the single most useful thing to know before you set out.

Two dress codes in one building

The most common reason visitors are turned away at Stephansplatz is not age and not documents. It is clothing. Casino Esplanade runs two regimes side by side. The Automatenspiel — the slot floor — has no dress code at all. The Klassisches Spiel, the room with croupiers and live tables, requires smart casual or evening wear.

In practice that means men need at least a collared or polo shirt. A T-shirt without a jacket will not be accepted at the tables. Tracksuits and sportswear are out in both areas. So you can walk into the slot floor in trainers and a hoodie, but if you decide later in the evening to try roulette, you may find the door closed.

This split is not standard across Germany. Wiesbaden applies one fairly relaxed list to the whole building; Hohensyburg in Dortmund has no fixed dress code at all. Hamburg is at the stricter end of the range. Pack a shirt.

Identity documents, and the law behind the desk

Casino Esplanade accepts a national identity card or a passport. A driving licence is expressly not accepted, and the house states this on its own location page.

The rule comes from § 8 paragraph 3 of the Interstate Treaty on Gambling 2021 — in German the Glücksspielstaatsvertrag, usually abbreviated GlüStV. It requires identification by inspection of an official identity document, or an equivalent identity check, followed by a comparison against the national exclusion register held under § 23. In land-based venues — betting shops, gaming arcades and casinos — this happens on every entry.

For the comparison to be unambiguous the house needs a document that establishes identity and address. The German plastic driving licence carries no address. Digital ID apps and photographs on a phone do not help at the desk either; a student card or a residence document is not a substitute. Visitors from abroad should bring a passport.

Admission, hours and the five days without gambling

Admission costs €2. That puts Hamburg at the cheaper end: Hohensyburg and Osnabrück both charge €5, while Wiesbaden and Bad Dürkheim state that entry is free and Kassel publishes no price at all.

The slot floor runs daily from 12:00 to 04:00. Live tables open at 17:00 and close at 02:00 from Sunday to Thursday, at 03:00 on Friday and Saturday.

The house closes completely on Good Friday, Volkstrauertag, Totensonntag, 24 December and 25 December. Volkstrauertag is the German national day of mourning and Totensonntag the Protestant Sunday of the dead; both fall on Sundays in November and both move each year. They are the most common cause of a wasted trip in late autumn, because nothing about the date looks special to a visitor.

Poker is the documented strength — and what is not documented

What the house itself confirms is its poker offering: Texas Hold'em and Omaha variants. Directory sites list specific numbers of roulette and blackjack tables, but those counts come from aggregators rather than from Spielbank Hamburg, so they do not appear here.

The same applies to table limits. Hamburg publishes no stake ranges. Minimum and maximum figures circulating online are neither dated nor sourced, and a wrong minimum costs you more at the cash desk than no information at all. If you are travelling on a budget, call on the day and ask which tables are open and at what stakes.

In any case the line-up on a given evening depends on attendance. A cash game opens when enough players arrive.

Who runs the house and who supervises it

Casino Esplanade is operated by Spielbank Hamburg Jahr + Achterfeld GmbH & Co. KG, registered at the Hamburg district court, with its seat at Stephansplatz 10; Sabine Hobusch is managing director. The supervisory authority is the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Ministry of the Interior and Sport.

Hamburg therefore works, like Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate, with a private licensee under state supervision rather than a state-owned operator. Press reports give dates and terms for the current licence; none of that could be confirmed against an official source, so this page leaves it out.

One point often misunderstood by visitors: the GGL, the joint gambling authority of the German states based in Halle, does not supervise this house. The GGL regulates online sports betting, virtual slot games and online poker. Land-based casinos are licensed and supervised by the individual states. § 2 paragraph 2 GlüStV lists exhaustively which provisions of the treaty apply to casinos at all — essentially the objectives, advertising, the social concept, player information, the exclusion system and the register.

The exclusion check that begins every visit

Before your ticket is printed, your details are compared against OASIS, Germany's national gambling exclusion register. It is operated by the state of Hesse through the Regierungspräsidium Darmstadt for all sixteen states, so an entry made anywhere in the country applies here.

A self-exclusion lasts at least three months, with one year as the default; a third-party exclusion at least a year. Neither ends automatically. After the minimum period the entry simply continues until the person applies in writing to have it lifted. A lifted self-exclusion takes effect one week after the application arrives, a third-party exclusion one month after. Both applying and lifting are free of charge for players under § 8c GlüStV.

Background on the register

Entry routes, minimum durations and the way out are set out on OASIS — Germany's gambling exclusion register.

No online roulette carries a German casino's name legitimately

Offers appear online that use the name of a German Spielbank to advertise online roulette or blackjack. No German casino house stands behind them. Virtual slot games that replicate classic banked table games — roulette, blackjack or baccarat in particular — are prohibited in Germany, and the GGL does not license them.

What German law does allow is narrower than it looks. Under § 22c GlüStV, online casino games may be offered or licensed by each state for its own territory alone, and only up to the number of casino licences its own state casino act would have permitted as at 17 January 2020. That is a state matter, not a national market.

For a visitor to Casino Esplanade the practical conclusion is simple: the casino is at Stephansplatz. If you encounter a site using the same name, check it against the GGL whitelist under § 9 paragraph 8 GlüStV before depositing anything.

Admission and the exclusion register

Since 1 July 2021 every German Spielbank checks at the door against the nationwide exclusion register. Anyone entered in OASIS gets into play neither online nor on the premises. How OASIS works
